A former England Schools International, Matthew developed at Cirencester Aacedmy under former Newport County and Wales International Steve Lowndes who recommended him to County and he joined them in the summer of 2005. Matthew made a number of appearances for Newport, including 29 last season before his move to Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee on January 31st 2007. He made six Championship appearances for City last season, all as substitute.Season 2007 - 08
