REPORT: YEOVIL 0 - 2 CARDIFF
Snapshot: Cardiff City left Huish Park with a win over an industrious looking Yeovil on Saturday - winning by two goals to nil via the penalty spot, one for Feeney and one for MacLean in the opening half.
The result was of course secondary to what was a good workout for both teams. Yeovil to their credit looked a solid prospect in the opening half, creating some nice movement without overly troubling Michael Oakes in the visitors goal. The turning point was the penalty decision that took the wind out of the Glovers sails after looking comfortable. Then, just before half time we were awarded another as the Yeovil 'keeper brought down Feeney for MacLean to smash in from the spot.
Going in to a two nil deficit made it hard work for our hosts in the second half, Cardiff looking more themselves after the break. The match ended as a comfortable win, though the Glovers can also take heart from a solid display before their League One season begins.
Team news: While talk outside of Huish Park was aimed at our potential new Anfield signing, Dave Jones' squad to start against the play-off final runners-up looked strong. There was no place for Darren Purse however - the City skipper delayed after having to help injured Riccardo Scimeca with a floating car incident following recent bad weather.
For Yeovil we would have a chance to see new signing Lloyd Owusu, though former QPR man Marc Bircham had to settle for a place on the bench.
Yeovil: Mildenhall, Lynch, Catro, Skiverton ©, Forbes, Dempsey, Barry, Owusu, Stewart, Warne, Hughes.Subs: Guyett, Morris, Rose, Bechet, Marshall, Ujah, Welsh, Knights, Bircham, Maher.
Cardiff: Oakes, Gunter, Capaldi, Rae, Johnson, Loovens, Sinclair, Feeney, MacLean, McPhail, Whittingham. Subs: McNaughton, Forde, Ledley, Parry, Green, Byrne, Cooper, Blake, Ramsey.
Report: After a brief spell of getting a feel for one another, Yeovil had the first chance to take an advantage after Roger Johnson felled Owusu five yards outside of the area, resulting in a free-kick that was wasted by Marcus Stewart low into the wall.
The Glovers looked comfortable at home, breaking forward well with some nice passing moments later. Trialist Castro sold Capaldi a cool dummy before the two collided in the area, though the calls for an early penalty were half hearted from the Huish Park support.
Yeovil were under little pressure from their patient Welsh guests inside the opening ten minutes, Cardiff more content to pass the ball around the deck than surge forward.
The best move came via a Feeney break just inside his half on twelve minutes, his surging run forward ended with a slight trip that the referee dismissed. On hand however was MacLean who set a pass to Sinclair, but Chris Gunter's deep cross on the right was wayward as the move fell apart.
As we reached the twenty minute mark it was fair to say that Yeovil had produced them more attack minded football, well illustrated by Paul Warne's ability to hold off a number of challenges, though his final cross found no-one to ensure parity remained.
Both teams were cautious in their approach, though had chances to take the lead in quick succession as we reached the midpoint of the half. Glenn Loovens was called into action to prevent an Owusu header from having time, before Warren Feeney had a tight angle shot blocked by the Glovers defence seconds later after a Whittingham break. Whittingham was arguably our most aggressive player going forward on the left, moments later despatching a wide shot of his own after a cheeky move to leave his marker lost.
Cardiff were growing is stature as the half developed, coming close after a neat one-two between Gavin Rae and Trevor Sinclair - the move beginning midway into the Yeovil half, ending with a tame Rae shot from the edge of the area that didn't overly trouble Glovers 'keeper Mildenhall.
We were of the mind that the half would be destined to end goalless, though inside of the final ten minutes that changed after intervention form the officials. Cardiff made a good break forward, culminating with an insightful pass across the field from Warren Feeney to the on-running Chris Gunter. Birthday boy Gunter found a yard into the box before being brought down by Mark Lynch, leaving the referee little choice but to point to the spot.
Up stepped Feeney, who's low penalty was blocked by the Glovers 'keeper back to the Northern Ireland Internationals path to tap in for the lead.

Yeovil were sparked into a quick reply after going a goal behind, breaking well on the left via Stewart before Paul Warne hit a rasping drive clear over the bar.
Stewart then almost capitalised on an Oakes mistake, but his direction spared the new 'keeper any blushes. Cardiff then made the half look more comfortable than it had been after a Feeney run that was brought to a close as Mildenhall came out of his area to bring him down for a sure fire penalty.
Feeney was left to regain his breath, leaving penalty duties to new boy MacLean - the former Rangers and Owls player smashing his spot-kick to the left, leaving the 'keeper no chance. The decision didn't go down too well with the home support, who roundly booed the officials as the half was brought to a close.

HALF TIME: YEOVIL 0 - 2 CARDIFF
Only one change was made for Cardiff after the break, David Forde coming on for Oakes - Forde immediately involved having to collect a half paced Warne shot in the opening minutes.
Cardiff were looking a lot more assured in the opening exchanges, passing well and preventing Yeovil from getting on the ball.
After only five minutes we saw a double City substitution to give a few more players some pre-season match experience. Paul Parry replaced Trevor Sinclair to end the former Man City players UK debut for Cardiff, while Joe Ledley came off the bench for Peter Whittingham.
Parry was immediately involved after coming on, breaking on the right, passing a neat ball to Feeney on the edge of the box, then collecting it back inside the area to hit a shot wide and end what would have been a great move.
The friendly looked more the part as minutes later Yeovil made three changes, including the introduction of Marc Bircham. Dave Jones also made a change as Chris Gunter was replaced by Kevin McNaughton.
The majority of play was now inside the Glovers half, with our hosts looking to penetrate on the break. Joe Ledley after the hour looked useful in his favoured wide left berth, breaking on goal but having his final ball blocked by the last man. Paul Parry then did well to pick up the loose ball, but his cross into the area was cleared as Yeovil regained composure.
Cardiff were looking more assured as the clock ticked on, though to their credit Yeovil were tenacious in their play and looked desperate to aim and find a way to decrease their deficit for the home fans.
Changes continued as the weather changed from sunshine to yet another summer shower. McPhail after seventy eight minutes came off for City young gun Aaron Ramsey, while Jason Byrne came on for MacLean.
Yeovil looked to end the half on a high, pushing forward and coming closest via a Bircham free-kick that came off the wall. Cardiff also had a chance via the had of Byrne following some nice work from Ramsey and McNAughton.
The final whistle came minutes after Johnson came off after a slight knock and was replaced by Darcy Blake - Johnson wanting to remain on the pitch till the death. The rain was pouring down as the two thousand fans aimed to find drier climates indoors. The result keeps the senior record going strong, Weymouth next in line on Tuesday.
