CARDIFF City today pulled off another big-name transfer coup by agreeing terms with striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. The former Leeds and Chelsea marksman will sign a two-year contract at Ninian Park today after undergoing a medical.

And that paves the way for Hasselbaink to form a mouth watering strike partnership with Robbie Fowler. Provided Fowler's fitness stays on schedule, the pair could link up for the home match against Coventry City on Saturday week. Hasselbaink's capture ends manager Dave Jones' search for reinforcements up front.

The Dutch international had been tipped to join City's Championship rivals Leicester. But he has chosen Cardiff and rang Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale, who he worked with during his spell at Leeds, saying "I want to join you".

Like Fowler, Hasselbaink is approaching the end of his career at 35 years old. But the signing of another Premiership scoring great - both he and Fowler are in the all-time top 10 at the highest level - is certain to excite Cardiff City fans.

Few, if any, would have predicted such an improbable attack pairing of Fowler and Hasselbaink just a few weeks ago.

"Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will have a medical today and then sign his contract," Ridsdale confirmed to the Echo.
