STADIUM: FULL STEAM AHEAD
Work is moving apace on creating the new 30,000-seater Cardiff City stadium in Leckwith, with the steel frame structure of the stadium now clearly taking shape.
To mark the progress that is being made the media have today been invited to a photo call on Tuesday, 4 March at 11:00am. Peter Ridsdale, Chairman of Cardiff City Football Club, Paul Guy, Director of PMG the club's development partners, and Paul Norman, Head of the Project Team at Laing O'Rourke, the project's main contractor will be welcoming Councillor Rodney Berman, Leader of Cardiff Council and Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, to view the progress made.
Also present are Vince Alm of the Cardiff City Supporters Club along with long time Cardiff City supporter Paul Corkery to welcome the progress made to this point.
The construction of the stadium's steel frame marks a major point in the project's development and symbolises the great progress that is being made on the scheme. This also includes: the development of Capital Retail Park which will be home to Costco, Asda, JJB, Marks & Spencer and ScS; a new athletics stadium; house of sport; and the development of a new Glamorgan Records Office.
Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Rodney Berman says: "Anyone driving past over recent months can't fail to have noticed how much work is taking place at Leckwith, but the true scale of the development is now really becoming apparent.
"Work on the new athletics stadium will be complete at the end of May, and the first retail stores are due to open in the summer, but I know that for many people the new stadium for Cardiff City and the Blues is the most exciting and long-awaited element. The clubs and their supporters deserve the modern facilities that they'll enjoy in this stadium, and I'm sure that fans of both clubs will be watching it take shape over the coming months with great interest and anticipation.
"A development agreement for the new Glamorgan Record Office was signed last week and details of the new House of Sport and Vision 21/Field Project will be revealed shortly. These and the ongoing improvements to the Albert Street car park area, next to Canton Community Hall, are the final elements of this huge and diverse regeneration development.
"This complex will become an exciting destination in itself, offering something for all sectors of the community, and showing further evidence of the Council's continuing commitment to providing high quality sport and recreating facilities befitting a capital city."
Paul Guy, Director of PMG adds: "Many people thought the new stadium wouldn't become a reality but great strides have been made over a short period of time and what you see today shows real progress and a great commitment. All the partners involved in this project have worked extremely hard and the visual results of that are now becoming apparent."
Peter Ridsdale, Cardiff City Football Club Chairman says: "The sight of the stadium finally being constructed is great news for Cardiff City Football Club and for all our supporters. It symbolises the fact this club is moving in the right direction and that the future is bright. I congratulate all our partners for their hard work so far and look forward to seeing the whole project completed in May 2009."
