Snapshot: Cardiff bagged a long overdue home win at the expense of the high flying Clarets at Ninian Park on Saturday, the result and three points doing much to lift the mood ahead of the second short international break.
As always, the experience of supporting Cardiff was enough to cause palpitations for the home support. Following a shared opening half an hour, City took the lead via man of the match Joe Ledley - Joe fittingly attributing his header to the memory of young supporter Ross Vaughan who had tragically passed away in recent weeks.
Cardiff went into the interval a goal to the good, though Burnley were level within four minutes of the restart via one of three substitutions - Akinbiyi on hand to head home after a Jordan cross.
Burnley were aiming to take the goal as a means to take the initiative in the match, though only five minutes after drawing level they found themselves behind again. Paul Parry was the man of the moment, smashing a goal from distance that left Kiraly with little chance.
Ninian Park was on tenterhooks as the match reached its closing stages, with Cardiff showing an intelligent level of tactics to slow the game down and spoil Burnley's chances. The final whistle came to much relief as the first home win was finally achieved against a quality opponent.
Team News: Sickness ruled out Stephen McPhail, with the midfielder being pulled out at the last minute. In his place we saw Peter Whittingham promoted from the bench with Aaron Ramsey a late call for the sixteen man squad. Apart from that the starting City squad was unchanged from our trip to Bramall Lane, although Ross Turnbull's recall to Middlesbrough gave David Forde a place on the bench after returning from his loan spell with Luton Town.
Cardiff: Oakes, McNaughton, Loovens, Johnson, Capaldi, Parry, Rae, Ledley, Whittingham, Fowler, Hasselbaink. Subs: Forde, Purse, Ramsey, Thompson, Gunter.
For Burnley, Chris McCann made the bench for the game, while David Unsworth was placed in the Clarets eleven to operate just in front of the back four.
Burnley: Kiraly, Jordan, Caldwell, Carlisle, Alexander, Unsworth, Mahon, Spicer, Lafferty, Gray, Blake. Subs: Harley, Akinbiyi, Elliott, Jensen, McCann
Chronological Report: Cardiff were the first to fire forward as the match began, with Rae the first to aim at goal after Fowler chested the ball to his path on the corner of the Clarets area; the looping shot sailing over the bar. Burnley took their time in finding their feet, but began to surge forward as we reached the ten minute mark. It took good tracking from Loovens to deny the run of top boy Andy Gray after a neat flick through from Robbie Blake, though Oakes was on hand to cover.
The match was evenly placed between the two teams, illustrated well after thirteen minutes as first Whittingham found Fowler with a long ball, who in turn intelligently set the ball to Hasselbaink - the Dutch striker muscled out on his penalty area run to win a corner. The Clarets cleared and immediately broke back, culminating in a shot for Robbie Blake from twenty five yards which didn't miss the crossbar by too much of a margin.
After twenty two minutes Darren Purse was thrust back into Championship action due to a problem for Glenn Loovens - Loovens having looked a little uncomfortable in the game until that point.
The chance of the half came after twenty five minutes, which saw Cardiff coming close to breaking the deadlock against the resilient and hard grafting Clarets. Jimmy had been cut down mid way into the Burnley half, but referee Penn allowed the game to play on. The ball came to McNaughton who powered down the right flank before flashing the ball low across the Burnley box. Bodies piled forward including Whittingham, who was inches away from connecting to tap the ball home, though it wasn't to be.
The match was evenly set between the two sides, with Burnley looking powerful going forward - a fact that was causing problems for Cardiff. Kyle Lafferty used his strength to brush aside both Whittingham and Capaldi as the half hour approached, though his run was halted by Johnson's strong and well executed tackle.
The game did find a first half goal after thirty six minutes. Just after this reporter was criticising Darren Purse's wide right positioning he delivered a brilliant cross for Joe Ledley to meet almost unmarked. Joe sent a bullet of a header past a diving Kiraly to see us take the lead - see, we always knew Darren was a sure thing over on the right!
GOAL: CARDIFF 1 - 0 BURNLEY. Joe Ledley. 36 mins
Joe's tail was definitely up, aided well by his opening goal. Two minutes later he spanked a mid range drive which looked to fire into the top of the Burnley goal, but he was denied by Kiraly's expert save as he tipped the ball over the bar.
Burnley aimed to break forward and restore parity before the interval, but despite an ability to claim a few corners they were denied as Cardiff held firm to see themselves go in a goal to the good.
HALF TIME: CARDIFF 1 - 0 BURNLEY
Burnley made the uncharacteristic choice of making their three substitutions in one hit straight after the break. On came Wade Elliott, Chris McCann and Ade Akinbiyi for Kyle Lafferty, Alan Mahon and David Unsworth.
Cardiff were the first to impose through Paul Parry, whostung the palms of Kiraly three minutes in after playing on from a foul. The early advantage howeverwent the way of our guests only one minute later as substitute Akinbiyi was afforded too much spacer to head home from the centre of the penalty area after Stephen Jordan crossed from the left.
GOAL: CARDIFF 1 - 1 BURNLEY. 49 mins. Akinbiyi
Burnley were more of a prospect going forward in the early stages, Akinbiyi's opener paving the way for further chances. Three minutes after drawing level Burnley could have gone ahead via Gray's point blank shot, but Oakes was strong and did well to hold the ball at pace.
The Clarets resurgence was brought to a halt five minutes after their equaliser as Paul Parry took the ball from Hasselbaink, then cut inside and smashed a twenty yard shot low and past a sprawled Kiraly. The goal did much to return the impetus to the home support, who had until then gone a little quiet.
GOAL: CARDIFF 2 - 1 BURNLEY. Parry. 54 mins
Burnley took going a goal behind well, coming close to finding an equaliser a minute later as Blake's delivery from a free kick looped over the wall. On hand however was Oakes who was thankful that the ball was a comfortable height for him to collect.
The match was certainly tenacious, with Spicer in particular getting stuck in - earning a talking to from referee Penn for a rash challenge on Joe Ledley. A minute later Dave Jones made a change up front, taking off Robbie Fowler for Steve Thompson.
The chances were coming for Cardiff, with Parry again looking dangerous as he sent a shot goalwards, denied again by Kiraly's agility to tip the ball over. Moments later Spicer was getting stuck in, this time shown a yellow card for his continued efforts.
Burnley were chasing the equaliser, but despite causing the tension levels to rise, couldn't force Oakes into any serious action. Cardiff on the other hand were testing Kiraly regularly, with the keeper doing well to read Jimmy's low rocket of a free-kick after eighty minutes by quickly getting down low.
Jimmy's effort was his last in the match, coming off minutes later for Aaron Ramsey to gain an introduction. Cardiff then engineered the match well into it's dying moments by working the ball into the opposition corners and frustrating Burnley enough to prevent them from getting the ball and running at us.
Four minutes of injury time came and went with the final whistle sounding to signal our first home win of the season. City now sit in twelfth place on thirteen points.
