REPORT: CARDIFF 1-3 MK DONS U18S
Sun 09 Mar 2008
Cardiff U-18's fall 3-1 to MK Dons in the rain at Treforest.
Cardiff youngsters toiled in the poor conditions at Trefforest as the MK Dons took advantage to inflict a 3-1 defeat on the Bluebirds. The opening half an hour saw the two teams adapt to the conditons as neither created any meaningfull chances. However, the first good chance of the game fell to the visitors when a good passage of play resulted in the MK Dons winger shooting from just inside the box. His shot went just wide, but he had to deal with his angry teammates as he had men in the box and he chose not to pass.
Another chance soon followed for the Dons when a shot flashed past Cardiff goalie Josh Magennis' left hand post. Magennis was also called upon again when a MK Dons free kick was sruck with pace. Magennis, though, got his positioning right as the ball went straight into his arms.
Although Cardiff had not created many clear cut chances they had a fair share of possesion and it was the Bluebirds that took the advantage just before the break. It came in slighty fortuitous circumstances, when a MK Dons man put the ball in his own net in an attempt to clear the ball. However, a goal is a goal and Cardiff went into the break 1-0 up.
Half Time: Cardiff 1-0 MK Dons
Cardiff had the first chance of the second half when midfielder Zak Evans had a shot from just outside the box that flew just over the bar, to the MK Dons goalkeeper's relief.
MK Dons then went down the other end to level the scores after an initial shot was saved by Magennis, however the follow up shot beat Magennis and a few Cardiff defenders on the line to equalise.
Cardiff reacted to this setback with a chance of their own when substitute Rafiq Kaeed went on a mazy run. The run started at the halfway line and he beat a number of Dons defenders. The resulting cross-shot in the area was blocked for a corner, that could have been dangerous for the visitors.
The MK Dons took the lead when they profited from a scramble in the penalty area. The ball fell to the MK Dons striker on his own and his shot beat Magennis from close range.
MK Dons created the next chance as the MK Dons striker was put through one-on-one with Magennis. However, he shot wide and the danger was averted. The Cardiff defenders appealed for offside, but it wasn't given and a goal would have stood.
MK Dons completed the scoring when the Cardiff defence was opened up by the MK Dons winger. His well placed shot beat Magennis and finished up in the left hand corner of the net to compound a disapointing day for Cardiff.

"Today was incredibly frustrating and disapointing. A good group of players all under performed today."
