REPORT: BRYNTIRION 0-3 CARDIFF U19s
Many thanks to Bryntirion Athletic for the fine hospitality given to everyone associated with Cardiff City FC.
Cardiff youngsters pull out a stellar performance to beat Bryntirion 3-0 in the Welsh Youth Cup. On a fine night for the young Bluebirds in Bridgend, they were able to turn on the style with three goals to garnish a quality performance. The starting line up was made up of 7 U-16 players, even though the tournament was for U-19's, and they all impressed in the victory.
Former Cardiff trainee Mika Chunuonsee was included in Bryntition's starting line-up. City took the lead on eight minutes. A deep cross was touched inside by Travis Wheatle and was side-footed into the bottom corner by Lee Smith. The visitors were 2-0 up on 27 minutes. Rhys Kelleher was played in and his fine shot across goal found the corner. The Bryntirion 'keeper was motionless and appeals for offside were waved away.
City should have extended their advantage on the hour when good work by Wheatle set up Kelleher, but he blazed over. It was not one way traffic but City were the classier of the two sides. On 67 minutes Smith's curling shot was tipped past the upright.
With fifteen remaining the City 'keeper made a good double save, firstly diving to his right to block a volley from inside the area and then parrying another shot straight down his throat immediately after. The match then got a little feisty. Nathaniel Garvis came on to steady the ship. The substitute made an instant impact on 83 minutes. Wheatle's one on one was saved but Garvis was there to take it past the 'keeper and find the empty net.
Full Time: Bryntirion 0-3 Cardiff
The victory was excellent for Cardiff, but I think the most pleasing thing may be how well the youngsters adapted to the tricky conditions and Bryntirion simply couldn't handle the Bluebirds.
Cardiff Coach Geraint Twose: "It was an excellent performance tonight. The passing and movement was first class and I'm delighted how well the U-16's coped with the game. They took on board all the coaching we gave them and they adapted very well in a short space of time."
Man(Men!) of the Match: Aaron Wildig and Jonathan Meades
It may be unusual to give both men the Man of the Match award, but they both fully deserved it. They controlled the play well and everything for Cardiff went through them.
